Jolocom puts sovereign identities, as well as SSI into a single wallet as part of the ONCE project.
Jolocom is currently working on the project “ONCE – Online einfach anmelden” (simply register online – ONCE) alongside a number of prestigious partners, with the aim to bring the digital identity of any citizen onto their smartphone.
The project is part of the competitive innovation programme “Showcase Secure Digital Identities” (SSDI) funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and one of four projects that qualified for the implementation phase.
Jolocom is a partner in three of the four SDI implementation projects, to which it will lend its expertise in self-sovereign identity and years of experience in developing digital identity wallets.
ONCE is the first of these projects to launch.
After a year’s preparation during the initial competition phase, the implementation phase of the ONCE project started in May 2021.
Currently, the focus is on the development and application of the technical components. Soon, however, a large number of use cases from the public administration, mobility and tourism sectors will be piloted in the Hesse region and in partner cities in Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia. It is at this stage that the ONCE ecosystem will be tested by ordinary citizens.
The ONCE ecosystem consists of a number of inter-dependent and well coordinated components that are intended to serve as a reference point for a long-lasting open identity ecosystem in Germany. As such, components developed in the project have been dubbed ONCE-compliant solutions.
In terms of its functionality, the ecosystem is designed to serve officially issued, so-called sovereign identities and proofs (eID, mDL, iKfz), as well as digital identity credentials issued and used according to the principles of self-sovereign identity. The ONCE project is also taking recent developments in the European eIDAS regulation into consideration, with the aim of providing future-proof solutions for digital identities to German and EU citizens.
Within the ONCE project, Jolocom is responsible for the development of the ONCE-compliant wallet. This will be based on Jolocom’s existing SmartWallet and will, with the aid of the project partners, be supplemented with additional modules and functions over the next two years.
