An Outlook on 2022

Flashbacks  •
Dec 19, 2021

2021, and what a year it’s been. Between all the hustle and bustle of pre-Christmas, we took a step back not to send you another flashback article, but to look ahead at what’s coming next.

If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that sometimes we cannot plan things. BUT Jolocom has plans and projects for 2022 that are as certain as can be. Let us introduce you to some exciting news as we finish this year and look forward to the next one.

Projects

You’ve heard a lot about our SDI projects, and they will keep us busy next year too. The two short acronyms of ONCE and IDIdeal are our main projects in bringing the SSI world to the individual here in Germany. The key focus is interoperability and following the same technical standard. In addition to that, we work on different SSI based projects in the public sector as well. Be sure to check in again in a few weeks, when we can tell you more. We also expanded the role of consulting at Jolocom in case you might think of implementing SSI at your organization: https://jolocom.io/blog/consulting-ssi/

Currently we are talking to potential developmental partners about financial and public projects. As our connections and projects are expanding, so is our team. We are happy to see the first real life users and customers for our use cases in 2022 and look forward to bringing the SSI work to the people. This would not be possible without the engagement of a highly motivated team behind Jolocom. If this sounds interesting to you and the outlook of 2022 seems like something that you would like to contribute to, check our open positions: https://jolocom.io/hiring-product-designer/ . We are hiring and looking forward to getting to know you! Read more about our work in the next Tech paragraph:

Tech

The SDI projects will most likely be the focus (from a tech perspective) for the next year. A number of use cases will be piloted as part of these projects (mostly public administration / mobility) as well.

From a tech perspective, in order to satisfy the SDI requirements we are building new features on a few fronts, but the core is the next iteration of our Jolocom SDK.

For us, interoperability will remain a very present topic for the next year (https://jolocom.io/blog/can-we-avoid-a-ssi-babel/). In the context of the SDI projects we have been working (also across consortia) on defining and documenting a set of SSI specifications we can all implement around. This would allow Wallets / use cases developed in different consortia to be interoperable / used with each other. We have shared and refined these efforts together with the wider SSI community (e.g. at IIW 33, as well as the DIF Interoperability Working group, among the SDI consortia, and the German Begleitforschung) on a few occasions.

Events

Since 2015, Jolocom took part in the Internet Identity Workshop. Since 2018, we also sponsor it. Now we are happy to announce that the next IIW will take place from 26th – 28th April 2022. Jolocom is happy to take part in solving identity issues at the IIW #34, and, what’s even more exciting, the event is planned to be in person in Mountain View, CA. What exactly is happening at the IIW? As the name suggests, we discuss all things identity with amazing partners from around the world. In dozens of sessions and lunches we have the opportunity to engage with new professional international connections, discussing, working on and learning about Internet Identity today.

Yet, that is not the only event we can look forward to. Connecting to like-minded people and organizations is an important part of our work. Therefore, we are happy to join the DWeb Camp, date yet to be announced. Moreover, Berchain is also awaiting us next year. As long time contributors to DIF, we are looking forward to 24th February 2022, when the next DIF event takes place. Since 2021, Jolocom is member of the Steering Committee as well.

That being said, let us tell you that we are here for you next year, too. Be sure to hear from us on our communication channels.
